[10:31] Student002 Meredith: is what?
[10:31] You: 3c
[10:31] Student002 Meredith: a/e
[10:32] Student005 Meredith: so you only want just a's
[10:32] You: aha a trick!
[10:32] You: lol
[10:32] You: FA/E - First - you do the work that you normally do for an A
[10:32] Student005 Meredith: ok
[10:32] You: then you do the E work
[10:32] Student002 Meredith: yeah
[10:32] You: still have to do the A work
[10:32] You: good - remember you are here to learn!
[10:33] You: dont worry about the time - before may if we do 2/3 close readings u will be more than equipped
[10:33] You: NO RUSH!
[10:33] Student005 Meredith: ok
[10:33] Student002 Meredith: ok

[10:38] Student005 Meredith: the question sorry
[10:38] Student002 Meredith: i have no idea
[10:38] You: alicia?
[10:39] Student005 Meredith: do you mean to just break down the question like the other two with how we would answer it
[10:39] You: absolutely
[10:39] Student005 Meredith: because in that case the answer is in the question
[10:39] You: what is the question point us to do ?
[10:39] You: which of the grid elements?
[10:39] You: lol
[10:39] Student002 Meredith: word choice and sentence structure
[10:39] Student005 Meredith: use three of the 4 tone word choice and structure
[10:40] Student005 Meredith: but you only need to use two
[10:40] You: questions like: WRITER'S LANGUAGE; WRITER'S STYLE, etc. mean that ALL the grid lights stay ON!
[10:40] Student005 Meredith: ok
[10:40] Student002 Meredith: ok
[10:41] Student005 Meredith: so basically just use what you are more comfortable with or can see more clearly in the paper
[10:41] Student005 Meredith: ?
[10:41] You: only when you go to the passage will YOU decide if it's STRUCTURE, TONE (i.e. Stance); WORD CHOICE; IMAGERY (FIG. LANG)
[10:41] Student005 Meredith: ok
[10:41] Student002 Meredith: ok
[10:41] You: yes - but at least with this method you aren't doing THAT for every A type question
[10:41] You: alicia - is this helpful?
[10:41] Student005 Meredith: yes
[10:41] You: good stuff
[10:42] Student005 Meredith: i was really confused when we started cause i didn't know what you meant
[10:42] Student005 Meredith: but i get it now, i think
[10:42] You: im making you aware of what the question is asking you to do, as well as keeping in mind that you are NOT doing a U-type question
[10:43] Student005 Meredith: kk
[10:43] Student002 Meredith: yeah
[10:43] You: U A and E's are PHYSICALLY separated!!!!
[10:43] You: so it should be LOGICALLY - when you are using your brain!
[10:43] Student005 Meredith: :P
[10:43] Student005 Meredith: gotcha
[10:43] You: basic cubes will be GREAT help when we come to answer - I will show you how to use a note card system
[10:43] Student002 Meredith: right
[10:43] You: magic
[10:43] You: are we kool?
[10:44] Student005 Meredith: yup

[10:45] You: good
[10:45] You: A?
[10:45] Student002 Meredith: ok
[10:45] Student002 Meredith: yeah
[10:45] You: grid?
[10:45] Student002 Meredith: word choice?
[10:45] Student005 Meredith: well it says features of language so that would mean tone, word choice and structure so all of them
[10:46] You: MAGIC!
[10:46] You: well done
[10:46] Student002 Meredith: right
[10:46] You: but remember - TONE (STANCE) is the focus here
[10:46] Student005 Meredith: ok
[10:46] You: then look at the particular features that give the tone
[10:46] You: question: can you get a RED cube on its own?
[10:47] Student005 Meredith: tone always has a technique behind it to give it emphasis
[10:47] You: alex
[10:47] You: blank sheet of papre
[10:47] Student002 Meredith: aye
[10:47] You: no stance, atmosphere mood
[10:47] You: ok
[10:48] You: add the word HELP
[10:48] You: you've got WORD CHOICE & STANCE - two cubes
[10:48] Student002 Meredith: ok
[10:48] You: add ! - exclamation mark, and put it in a paragraph of its own - you have THREE CUBES
[10:48] You: get it?
[10:48] Student002 Meredith: not really
[10:49] Student005 Meredith: me either
[10:49] You: like the look of 7?

ONLINE

vScotEd's first island is ONLINE!

This evening saw the very FIRST student lesson: Standard Grade English. The rest of the week will see similar initiation-type lessons for Higher English.

A successful evening was achieved:

Observations:

- upload of materials BEFORE lesson (pre-empting any delays);

- BUG in powerpoint projector object? control of one seemed to

alter the other

- standard directory structure is cumbersome

Suggestions:

- preload projectors/widgets with content;

- smaller texture displays for A4-sourced text/docs

- organise resources

- perhaps design Higher- / Standard Grade-centric classes (as opposed to the standard)

- need text-loggers (feed directly to blog?), highlighters and rss feed widgets

Lesson overview:

- Show the student the difference in Close Reading question types - there are those that focus on the chosen text; those that focus on the general principles of language.

Lesson transcript:
